Why white shoes go dull so quickly

A white upper and a white sole are unforgiving. Dust shows as grey, scuffs show as black lines, and the rubber around the sole slowly turns cream. Much of that yellowing comes from how shoes are cleaned at home: a hard scrub with a strong detergent, then drying in direct sun, can leave a pair looking older than before it was washed.

White leather and white canvas are not the same job

If the pair has trim in another colour, such as a tan heel tab or a coloured logo, mention that as well so it is protected during cleaning.

Getting the best result from a white pair

Send the pair as soon as the marks appear, because a fresh stain is easier to lift than one that has set. Mention any mark you care most about, such as ink, a coffee spill or a heel scuff. Please skip machine washing and do not leave wet shoes in the sun before you hand them over; both can set stains and yellow the soles.

Simple care between cleans

A little care keeps a white pair looking fresh for longer. Wipe off dust and mud with a soft damp cloth soon after wearing, instead of letting it dry in. Let wet shoes dry in the shade, away from direct sun and heaters. Store them away from sunlight, and keep them stuffed lightly so the upper holds its shape.
